FAQ

Common questions

Clear, evidence-based answers about scope, referrals and coverage.

What conditions do you treat?

The clinic treats cysts; lipomas and appropriate superficial soft-tissue masses; benign moles and skin lesions; skin tags; selected suspicious or confirmed skin cancers, including appropriate basal cell (BCC) and squamous cell (SCC) cases; abscesses; pilonidal disease; and small umbilical hernias in suitable candidates. Each has its own page under Conditions with more detail.

Do I need a referral?

Referrals from your family physician or nurse practitioner are welcome and help us gather the relevant history. If you are unsure whether your concern is suitable, contact the clinic and we will advise on next steps.

Is treatment covered by OHIP?

OHIP coverage depends on your diagnosis and medical indication. Many benign cyst, lipoma, mole and skin-lesion removals may be uninsured. You are informed of any fee before proceeding, so there are no surprises.

Who performs the procedures?

Assessment and treatment are carried out personally by Dr. Melinda Maggisano, a board-certified general surgeon who completed fellowship training in Minimally Invasive Surgery at the University of Toronto. Care is not delegated to non-physician staff.

Will treatment happen at my first visit?

Where clinically appropriate, treatment may be completed in the same office-based visit. In other cases a plan is made together, and any tissue removed is sent for pathology with appropriate follow-up.
