What it is

Skin tags are common, benign growths of soft tissue that typically sit on a narrow base. They often appear where skin folds or rubs — the neck, underarms, eyelids, groin or under the bust.

They are harmless, but they can be a nuisance when they are repeatedly irritated.

Common reasons to seek assessment

  • The tag catches on clothing, collars, straps or jewelry
  • It is irritated by friction or shaving
  • It has become sore, inflamed or has bled
  • There are several tags in one area
  • The appearance of the tag bothers you

How it is assessed at Sereva

Dr. Maggisano confirms that the growth is consistent with a skin tag, since other lesions can look similar.

The size, base and location of each tag are considered in choosing a removal method, and it is confirmed whether treatment in the clinic is appropriate.

Treatment options that may be available

  • Removal of selected skin tags using a method appropriate to the size and location of each tag
  • Treatment of several tags in one visit where that is appropriate and comfortable
  • Local anaesthetic where it is needed for comfort, depending on the method and site

Which of these applies to you — if any — depends on your individual assessment.

What to expect during treatment

Skin tag removal is usually a brief, straightforward office procedure.

Sensitive sites, such as near the eyelids, are approached with particular care, and some locations may be better managed elsewhere.

You are told which tags were treated and given simple aftercare guidance before you leave.

Recovery and follow-up

The treated sites are typically small and heal with basic aftercare, which is explained to you in writing.

Mild tenderness or a small scab at each site is common as the area settles.

Follow-up is arranged if review is needed, and new tags can develop over time in areas prone to friction.

Suitability, fees & OHIP coverage

Whether treatment is appropriate, and whether it is covered by OHIP, depends on your diagnosis and on the recommended treatment. Some procedures are insured when they are medically indicated, while many removals performed for benign or appearance-related reasons are uninsured. Where a fee applies, it is explained to you before anything proceeds, so you can decide how you would like to continue.
