Benign Moles and Skin Lesions

What it is

Moles and other skin lesions are extremely common, and the majority are benign. They vary widely in size, colour, texture and location.

People seek assessment for many reasons — some medical, some practical. A surgical assessment clarifies what a lesion is and whether removing it is appropriate.

Common reasons to seek assessment

  • The lesion is irritated by clothing, shaving, jewelry or friction
  • It is repeatedly caught, scratched or traumatized
  • It is uncomfortable, itchy or bleeds when disturbed
  • You are uncertain about a lesion and would like it looked at
  • The appearance of the lesion bothers you

How it is assessed at Sereva

Dr. Maggisano examines the lesion and reviews any history of change, and discusses your reasons for seeking assessment.

The surgeon determines whether removal is appropriate, which method suits the lesion, and whether sending tissue for pathology is recommended.

Where a lesion has features that call for a different pathway, this is explained and an appropriate referral is arranged.

Treatment options that may be available

  • Excision of appropriate benign lesions under local anaesthetic
  • A removal method chosen to suit the size, type and location of the lesion
  • Pathology assessment of removed tissue where the surgeon recommends it
  • Referral where specialized assessment or management is the more appropriate route

Which of these applies to you — if any — depends on your individual assessment.

What to expect during treatment

Suitable removals are performed in our clinic under local anaesthetic.

The area is numbed and the lesion is removed using the planned method; the approach to closure depends on the site and size.

Any effect on the appearance of the treated area is discussed with you beforehand, so you know what to expect.

Recovery and follow-up

Aftercare depends on the site and the method used. You are given written wound-care and activity guidance.

Follow-up is arranged where suture removal, wound review or discussion of pathology is required.

Where tissue was sent for pathology, results are reviewed with you and shared with your referring clinician.

Suitability, fees & OHIP coverage

Whether treatment is appropriate, and whether it is covered by OHIP, depends on your diagnosis and on the recommended treatment. Some procedures are insured when they are medically indicated, while many removals performed for benign or appearance-related reasons are uninsured. Where a fee applies, it is explained to you before anything proceeds, so you can decide how you would like to continue.
