What it is

A cyst is usually a benign, self-contained sac that forms beneath the skin. Many are slow-growing and painless, and some remain unchanged for years.

Over time a cyst may enlarge, become tender, drain, or become inflamed. Because the sac has a wall, a cyst that has been drained alone can refill.

Common reasons to seek assessment

  • The lump is enlarging, or has changed in size or texture
  • It is uncomfortable, tender, or catches on clothing
  • It has drained, discharged, or become inflamed
  • It sits in an area that is repeatedly irritated
  • You are uncertain what the lump is and would like it assessed

How it is assessed at Sereva

Dr. Maggisano reviews your history and examines the area personally to consider what the lump is likely to be and whether office-based removal is appropriate.

Where a diagnosis is not clear on examination, further assessment or imaging may be recommended before any treatment is planned.

Treatment options that may be available

  • Complete excision of appropriate cysts under local anaesthetic, including the cyst wall, which can help reduce the likelihood of recurrence
  • Initial treatment of an acutely inflamed or infected cyst, which may need to settle before definitive removal is considered
  • Referral for further assessment or hospital-based care where that is the more appropriate route

Which of these applies to you — if any — depends on your individual assessment.

What to expect during treatment

Suitable procedures are performed in our office using local anaesthetic, so you are awake and comfortable throughout.

The area is numbed, the cyst is removed, and the skin is closed. Removed tissue may be sent for pathology when the surgeon considers it appropriate.

You are told what was done before you leave, and given written aftercare instructions.

Recovery and follow-up

Most people return to light daily activity soon afterwards, though this depends on the size and location of the cyst and your own circumstances.

You receive wound-care guidance, advice on what to watch for, and arrangements for suture removal or follow-up where needed.

If tissue was sent for pathology, results are reviewed and discussed with you, and shared with your referring clinician.

Suitability, fees & OHIP coverage

Whether treatment is appropriate, and whether it is covered by OHIP, depends on your diagnosis and on the recommended treatment. Some procedures are insured when they are medically indicated, while many removals performed for benign or appearance-related reasons are uninsured. Where a fee applies, it is explained to you before anything proceeds, so you can decide how you would like to continue.
