Selected Skin Cancers
What it is
Sereva Surgical Clinic provides assessment and treatment of selected skin cancers, including appropriate basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) cases.
Suitability depends on the type of lesion and on its size, location and complexity. Some lesions are well suited to office-based surgery; others are better managed in a specialized or hospital-based setting.
Common reasons to seek assessment
- A lesion has been identified or biopsied by another clinician
- A spot is growing, bleeding, crusting, or will not heal
- A lesion has changed in size, shape, colour or sensation
- You have been referred for surgical assessment of a skin lesion
- You have a history of skin cancer and a new area of concern
How it is assessed at Sereva
Dr. Maggisano reviews your history, any previous biopsy or pathology results, and examines the lesion and surrounding skin.
Assessment considers the type, size, depth, location and complexity of the lesion, along with your health history, to determine the appropriate treatment setting.
Where treatment in the clinic is suitable, the plan is explained clearly. Where it is not, an appropriate referral is arranged so care continues in the right place.
Treatment options that may be available
- Surgical excision of selected, appropriate lesions under local anaesthetic in our office
- Biopsy where tissue diagnosis is needed to guide the recommendation
- Pathology assessment of removed tissue, with results reviewed and discussed
- Referral for specialized, reconstructive or hospital-based management where that is more appropriate
Which of these applies to you — if any — depends on your individual assessment.
What to expect during treatment
Suitable procedures are carried out in our clinic under local anaesthetic.
The plan for the lesion and the approach to closure are discussed with you beforehand, including what to expect for the treated area.
Removed tissue is sent for pathology where appropriate, and you are told when and how results will be discussed.
Recovery and follow-up
Aftercare depends on the size and site of the lesion and on how the wound was closed. Written wound-care and activity guidance is provided.
Follow-up is arranged to review the wound and to discuss pathology results with you.
Ongoing skin surveillance or further treatment may be recommended, and your referring clinician is kept informed.
Suitability, fees & OHIP coverage
Whether treatment is appropriate, and whether it is covered by OHIP, depends on your diagnosis and on the recommended treatment. Some procedures are insured when they are medically indicated, while many removals performed for benign or appearance-related reasons are uninsured. Where a fee applies, it is explained to you before anything proceeds, so you can decide how you would like to continue.
